We got a really big box of candles for free at a garage sale and they have ended up being a great source of backyard activities. It has been so wet we don’t have to worry about starting anything else on fire and there seems to be a strong magnetic attraction to melting, cooking (and burning.) Katie made a drip sculpture and Lauren worked out how to cook pasta over a small fire on a pie cooker. There were many hours spend outside doing over several days this so we were glad we found that garage sale!
Gever Tulley wrote a book called “Fifty Dangerous Things You Should Let Your Children Do” – play with fire is on the list. Having a fire pit in the backyard has been part of our home life for a number of years so this one is easy and natural for us!
