I have joined an online coaching community for homeschool moms through BraveWriter.com. We are given audio and video lectures and assignments for projects to try in our homeschools each month. I really love it so far. The school assignment this month had to do with incorporating board games into our schools. We have tons of games and have enjoyed them in spurts so it was fun to bring some of those back out.
The "advanced" challenge was to make your own board game. When I first mentioned this to the girls, they were less excited than I thought they would be. But about a week later, they took this bubble of an idea and ran with it, creating their own Wild Kratts Creature Power Triva Game.
This game is beautiful and fairly elaborate. It involves, wipe-off marker score boards, custom game pieces, a board made from scratch and multi-media triva Q&A on the ipad.
In addition to this game, we also worked on (but have not finished) a big puzzle and got some fun new games from the thrift store. Games have been a BIG hit this month, a GREAT choice for January. They add a lot of fun to our family time, school time and free time. They develop a lot of social and thinking skills in a natural way. That is not to say it's always perfect or nobody ever gets mad or cries. But even in those situations, we are still learning and growing!
