I have been stalking a few “pick your own” berry farms for at least a month, waiting for picking season to begin. I originally wanted to go south of the Twin Cities to combine the trip with a visit to Minnesota’s Largest Candy store but that plan was thwarted by road closures due to spring floods.
Instead, we went to Bauer Berry in Champlin. It was a bit of a drive, but completely worth it not only to see what a berry farm looks like and works like but for the wonderful experience of picking and then using such lovely fresh food.
With our crew of 6, it was short work to pick a couple trays of berries.
We ended up with more than enough for lots of snacking, making freezer jam and also a nice berry rhubarb crisp using rhubarb from our garden.
On the way home we stopped at the nature center that is part of Elm Creek Park Reserve, where we enjoyed some bird watching and critter observations.
