Dry Ice Fun

dry1dry2

Lauren and Gloria were up last night watching science videos they had found with dry ice demonstrations. They were wondering if we could try some of the ideas at home. Turns out dry is available at a few grocery stores around here, including one that was only a few miles off from our usual route home from the MOA area where we had been on today’s field trip. It was fairly inexpensive at $1.29 per pound. We got about 7 pounds and spent more than an hour doing bubbly dry ice, smoking/foggy effects, experimenting with adding color to the water, noticing that warm water works best, observing the frost collection on the containers, figuring out which container size & shape delivers the best fog and comparing the fog spread over different surfaces such as wood, the driveway and the big puddle next to the road. We talked about the science behind what was happening but left a lot to just simple observation and experimenting/playing.
