Minnehaha Creek

With Lake Minnetonka at a record high this week, we had to see the result of the creek by going to Minnehaha Falls Park first. We started out at Ikea for free lunch but got there a little too early. We got breakfast instead, which was not especially good, so we’ll have to make sure we time our free lunch runs to be there at 11 a.m.

We took a different route down than usual, which got us near where the creek dumps into the Mississippi River in just a few minutes. The water was much higher than this spring but not quite as high as the 2011 flood. However, the whole creek was flowing a lot faster than we have ever seen it. Hiking was not a problem and the sounds of the rushing water was wonderful – it sounded like we were up north!

The girls noticed quite a few carp lurking around each of the bridges so we had to stop and look at them each time.

The water was much too fast in the flats where were like to wade so we did not spend the usual amount of time there. It was pretty dangerous looking and if anyone got swept away, there was almost no clearance under the bridges and it would have been a disaster. Still, it was amazing to observe that the creek is by no  means static and very responsive to the local rainfall.
